Lord of the World is a dystopian novel written by Robert Hugh Benson, first published in 1907. Set in a future world marked by political and social upheaval, the story revolves around the rise of a charismatic and enigmatic figure named Julian Felsenburgh, who emerges as a global leader and eventually becomes the “Lord of the World.” The novel explores themes of religion, secularism, and the clash between faith and atheism in a world where traditional religious beliefs have declined, and a new world order has been established. As Felsenburgh’s influence grows, the novel follows the lives of several key characters, including a Catholic priest named Father Percy Franklin, who struggles to maintain his faith in the face of a rapidly changing and increasingly godless society. Both Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI have recommended this work of fiction. Pope Francis described it as a book that shows the “globalization of hegemonic uniformity.” The novel addresses contemporary issues, such as the fusion of technology and politics, and warns about the dangers of a world without spirituality. Lord of the World is an astonishing story for its technological and political predictions, many of which have come true. The novel anticipates mass movements and the danger of a materialistic world that denies the supernatural, thus allowing the entrance of the Antichrist. Benson warns us about the cost of globalization without spiritual values, making this novel an essential reading to understand current challenges.
