NICCOLO MACHIAVELLI

(Florencia, 1469-id. 1527) fue un político, escritor y filósofo del Renacimiento italiano que influyó de manera decisiva en el pensamiento occidental. Secretario de la República de Florencia, acometió numerosas misiones diplomáticas y reorganizó el ejército de Florencia. La caída de la República por obra de los Médicis (1513) lo apartó del poder, pero lo acercó a la literatura.

Heredero de la filosofía política fundada por los griegos, se enfrentó a la vieja mentalidad cristiano-medieval, al tiempo que ponía las bases de la nueva mentalidad laico-burguesa. Nicolás Maquiavelo parte de los principales sucesos contemporáneos para definir un ordenamiento social diferente al de tiempos pasados, en el que la razón de estado tiene como objetivo la mejora de la sociedad y el perfeccionamiento del hombre.

Niccolò Machiavelli drew on his own experience of office under the turbulent Florentine republic, rejecting traditional values of political theory and recognizing the complicated, transient nature of political life. Concerned not with lofty ideal but with a regime that would last, The Prince has become the bible of realpolitik, and it still retains its power to alarm and to instruct.
